More than a million spectators will be attending the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games this summer but for Dettol Pro Solutions, as the Games’ Official Hygiene Partner, the priority is to ensure that through the development of bespoke hygiene protocols, organisers are able to drive peace of mind for attendees, athletes and volunteers from all over the world.

With the landmark national event just around the corner, Dettol Pro Solutions is lifting the lid on how its bespoke protocols implemented at the event will be key to helping maintain a hygienic environment for athletes and spectators over the 12-day event. After two years of the pandemic, the general attitude toward cleaning and hygiene has changed, with cleaning taking on a new meaning1 - Cleaning and disinfecting surfaces have become a top priority for businesses, companies and households alike.

An estimated one million people are set to attend the Games over the 12-day event across 15 competition venues in Birmingham, Coventry, Royal Leamington Spa and Warwick. Dettol Pro Solutions will be working alongside the organisers to apply bespoke hygiene protocols and cleaning strategies to keep hygiene front of mind.

Hygiene has a key role in helping tackle challenges caused by the pandemic. More people, organisations and businesses are now appreciating why hygiene is important for them – not just as a business habit, but as an essential proactive measure to help break the chain of infection of their employees & customers.

Surface Hygiene When And Where It Matters

At Dettol Pro Solutions, our hygiene approach is based on the science of targeted hygiene in which hygiene interventions should take place at key moments where they are more likely to make the most difference, and the frequency of action and the timing of disinfection throughout the day is also critical.

Protocols for disinfection have been developed with this science in mind. The Reckitt risk assessments consider the use of the space, numbers of people and the science about what surfaces have been shown, through research to become a potential source of infection risk. For example, disinfection between use of equipment is a simple way to ensure contamination does not spread from one user to the next. Research has shown that from one contaminated high-touch surface such as a door handle, viruses could spread to 14 people3, so frequent and targeted disinfection of these hotspots has been shown as a key intervention to help break the chain of infections.

Handwashing At Its Finest

Dettol hand sanitising station In relation to Targeted Hygiene, hand hygiene, whether washing or sanitising is an essential element4. With the same principles as for surface disinfection, hand hygiene needs to take place at key moments when it will make a difference, rather than simply asking people to wash their hands “frequently” or so many times per day. One key moment, for example, is upon arriving at a destination, whether it is a sporting event, home or even the car.

Interestingly, hand hygiene is regarded as one of the most important hygiene measures adopted by the public, with 38% of people agreeing with the statement, only followed by getting vaccinated and mask-wearing with 74.5% and 43% respectively5. However, it is known that this knowledge does not necessarily translate into practice6. Indeed some studies have found lack of hand hygiene after using the bathroom to be as high as 80%7. Understanding these facts, Dettol Pro Solutions’ team of experts have used a number of scientific elements to determine the placement of 2,800 Dettol hand sanitiser dispensers, alongside the distribution of hygiene kits for all volunteers, staff and attendees over the duration of the Games

Educational And Hygiene Messages Come Out On Top

So, along with the installation and distribution of dispensers and hand sanitisers, partnering with Dettol Pro Solutions means having access to an expert team of virologists, microbiologists and medical scientists, and therefore science-backed measures, hygiene training, hygiene kits and hygiene messages backed by behaviour science. One way these measures will be brought to life at Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games is through a suite of creative assets including floor stickers and wall stickers. We also approached the hygiene protocols differently by suggesting placing some posters on the back of the cubicle doors as studies suggested reminders that guided people to the sink whilst using the bathroom, combined with signage and information on how to wash hands led to increased handwashing levels, even as high as 74%8.

Sustainable Cleaning

In addition to the importance of reducing the spread of bacteria and viruses, it also remains a priority for businesses to continue to improve their sustainability footprint. One way that businesses can start to address this issue is by utilising more focused hygiene protocols and strategies. By having a streamlined approach to cleaning, with identified hotspots and timings agreed, staff are able to use product more effectively, therefore using less overall whilst focusing on disinfection when and where it will make the most impact.

The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games celebrates human achievement, perseverance and dedication; attributes that Reckitt champions in its purpose to protect, heal and nurture in the relentless pursuit of a cleaner, healthier world.
